Steel Signing Marks Major Milestone in New West Essex YMCA Construction

LIVINGSTON, NJ — December 5, 2025 — The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges marked a major milestone Friday, Dec. 5 in the construction of the new West Essex YMCA with a ceremonial signing of the final steel beam. YMCA leaders, donors, partners, and local officials gathered at the construction site on South Livingston Avenue to celebrate the progress and the vision behind this transformative project.

“This beam signing is not only a moment of progress, but a celebration of the supporters, partners, and community members who helped make this vision a reality,” said Deborah Kessler, Chief Development Officer for the Metro YMCA of the Oranges.

To date, nearly $5 million in philanthropic and grant support has been raised to advance the project. The new state-of-the-art facility will provide expanded opportunities for health, wellness, and community connection.

Richard K. Gorab, President and CEO of the Metro YMCA, expressed gratitude to donors, government leaders, and project partners for their role in bringing the project to life. “Together, you have helped build more than a building; you have strengthened our community,” Gorab said.

Local officials, including Livingston Mayor Ed Meinhardt and members of the town council, joined Y leadership in recognizing the collaborative effort behind the project. Gorab also acknowledged the contributions of Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill, State Sen. John F. McKeon, U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, and the project team from Vericon Construction, Jarmel Kizel Architects & Engineers Inc., and Suburban Consulting Engineers.

During the ceremony, representatives from the West Essex YMCA Board of Managers, Metro YMCA Board of Directors, Y leadership staff, and capital donors signed their names on the final beam before it was lifted into place.

“This building symbolizes hope and potential — the potential to provide a safe and supportive space where everyone in our community feels welcomed and can pursue their best selves,” said Peter Tanella, Metro YMCA Board Chair.

The new West Essex Y facility is slated to open in late 2026 and will serve as a cornerstone for community activities designed to promote health, wellness, and community engagement among children, adults, and families. The new 54,000 square foot Y will be built at 304 S. Livingston Ave., within walking distance from the current West Essex Y.
