Grace Lutheran Church's Legacy Celebrated in New YMCA Community Space

LIVINGSTON, NJ – The West Essex YMCA has accepted a generous gift from Grace Lutheran Church in support of the Capital Campaign for the new Y. Through this gift, the church's longstanding legacy of service, fellowship, and community connection will be honored through the naming of the outdoor community commons area and recognition as a Visionary Leader on the donor wall.

Two original cornerstones from the congregation will be incorporated into the patio's paver design, creating a visible link between the church's past and the future of community service in Livingston.

The church was formally organized in 1946 and for decades served as a place of worship, fellowship, and outreach, helping shape the fabric of the local community. This past June, the congregation celebrated 80 years in Livingston.

"This partnership reflects the values that have long united our organizations: service, connection, and a commitment to helping neighbors thrive," said Richard K. Gorab, President and CEO of the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges. "By incorporating the church’s historic cornerstones into the new Y, we are honoring a legacy of impact while creating a space where future generations can create new memories and connections."

Located on South Livingston Avenue, the new West Essex YMCA is being built on the site formerly owned by Grace Lutheran Church. The church's history is intertwined with Livingston's growth. Its leaders and congregation helped build a foundation of service that will continue to inspire the next chapter of community impact through the new YMCA.

“It has been wonderful partnering with the West Essex YMCA, and we are grateful that the land on which Grace Lutheran Church stood for nearly 80 years will continue to serve the community for generations to come,” said Dianne Pondiscio on behalf of the church's board.

The outdoor community commons will serve as a central gathering space within the new YMCA campus, providing members and guests with opportunities to connect, relax, participate in community events, and enjoy the outdoors.
