The stress of daily life and social pressure often leads young women to ignore their own health.

According to the World Health Organization, half of all mental health disorders in adulthood start by age 18, but many are never recognized or treated. Depression is also a major cause of illness and disability for teens.

Encouraging healthy habits in the teen years and protecting young women from health risks now can help prevent problems later in life. Here are some ways adults can help the young women in their lives stay healthy.

Be an advocate for their health

Learn about health issues that often affect young women, like anxiety and eating disorders. Encourage them to care about their health early. This can help them manage stress and feel better overall. Self-care can mean keeping regular doctor’s appointments and checking in with themselves about how they are feeling and how stressed they are.

Talk about mental health

Good mental health helps women reach their goals and give back to their communities. Today, people are talking more openly about mental health, with a focus on awareness and prevention. Make it a normal topic with the young women in your life. Share advice, ask how they are feeling, and let them know you are there to support them.

Promote healthy eating

Healthy food supports both the body and mind. It helps with growth, maintaining a healthy weight, and feeling good about your body. Encourage young women to eat a mix of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

Fuel their fitness

Aim for about 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week, plus strength exercises at least two days a week to keep muscles and bones strong. Playing sports also helps young women stay active, build friendships, and grow more confident and resilient.

Inspire confidence

A recent survey of young people and their caregivers found that girls’ confidence drops sharply between ages 8 and 14, and most teen girls worry about failing. You can build their confidence by supporting their interests, praising their efforts, and being a positive role model. Encourage them to try new things, even if the outcome isn’t perfect.

Encourage volunteerism

Volunteering can lift a young woman’s mood and confidence, helping her feel proud of making a difference. It also helps her build meaningful relationships that can benefit her for years to come.
