At the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges, keeping children safe is central to everything we do. As trusted partners in your family's life, we want to make sure you have the information you need to protect the kids in your care, both at home and in the community.
One growing concern that health and safety officials are asking families to be aware of: illegal substances and certain medications are sometimes packaged to look like candy or sodas. This can include colorful pills, powders, edibles, or beverages that closely resemble familiar treats.
Because these substances are designed to look harmless and familiar, kids may not realize what they're holding. A child who finds something that looks like candy — at a park, a friend's house, or even at home — may eat it without knowing any better. The result can be serious: medical emergencies that require immediate treatment.
This isn't about causing alarm. It's about giving families the awareness to help prevent an accident before it happens.
A simple, ongoing conversation can make a real difference. We encourage you to talk with your child about:
These conversations don't need to be scary. Framing it as a habit — like looking both ways before crossing the street — helps kids understand the "why" without fear.
Acting quickly matters. If you believe a child has ingested an unknown substance:
Consider saving the Poison Control number in your phone now, so it's ready if you ever need it.
Keeping kids safe is a commitment we carry into every program, every branch, and every interaction with the children in our care. We maintain strict standards to protect the children who join us at the Y, and we continue to review and strengthen our policies, procedures, and training as the landscape of child safety evolves.
We can't do this alone. Families and community partners like you play an essential role in keeping kids safe, both inside our doors and beyond them.
We encourage you to explore these resources from national health and safety organizations for more information and guidance:
