Metro YMCA Appoints Deborah Kessler as Chief Development Officer

Metro YMCA Appoints Deborah Kessler as Chief Development Officer

LIVINGSTON, NJ - The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges, a leading non-profit organization serving Bergen, Essex, and Sussex counties, has named Deborah “Deb” Kessler as its new Chief Development Officer. She will work closely with the Y’s leadership teams to develop and spearhead annual fundraising initiatives, capital campaigns and strategies that advance the YMCA's mission of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

“The YMCA has shaped my personal journey, and I’m honored to serve in a role where I can give back,” said Kessler. “I’m committed to supporting the Y’s vital work and inviting the community to play an active role in shaping its future.”

Kessler joined the Y on Oct. 6, bringing over a decade of leadership in higher education advancement at the University of Arizona, where she played an integral role in a $3 billion fundraising campaign supporting capital projects, research, and student success. Her leadership was instrumental in securing landmark gifts, including the construction of cutting-edge facilities. As Assistant Vice President for Principal Giving and Regional Development, she led national fundraising efforts and her strategic vision continues to influence the university’s philanthropic outreach today.

In announcing her hiring, Metro YMCAs President and CEO Richard K. Gorab said: “Deb brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in philanthropy, strategic development, and organizational growth. Her leadership and vision will be instrumental as we continue to expand our culture of philanthropy and achieve new milestones.”

Prior to her career in higher education, Kessler worked in the private sector, specializing in marketing and business development. As Managing Director of a prominent Wall Street financial firm, she advised clients and managed projects across diverse industries.

Kessler understands the transformative impact the Y has on families and individuals because she’s lived it. Thanks to the Y’s child care program, she was able to pursue her professional ambitions with confidence.

“My favorite memories are those moments of picking up my daughter from aftercare, seeing her growing confidence, and the sense of belonging she felt in that space,” Kessler said. “The staff left an indelible mark not only on her life, but on mine as well, and I’ll always be grateful for the role they played in her development.”

Kessler is eager to use her expertise to ensure that these life-changing programs remain accessible to everyone. She joins as the Metro Y solicits community donations for a new West Essex YMCA and begins its 2026 Annual Support Campaign, which helps the one in four Y participants who rely on financial assistance.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Deb to the Metro YMCAs,” said Peter Tanella, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “Her deep experience in philanthropy and her heartfelt connection to the Y’s mission make her uniquely suited to lead our development efforts. We’re confident her leadership will inspire even greater community engagement and support as we continue to grow and serve.”
