Metro YMCA Honors Board Member for Promoting Y’s Mission

LIVINGSTON, NJ - The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges recently honored Marlene Waldock with the Kenneth A. DeGhetto Philanthropic Ambassador Award for her exceptional service and dedication. Waldock, from West Orange, has been a board member for 12 years, serving in various leadership roles including Chair of the Governance Committee and Secretary on the Board’s Executive Committee. She was instrumental in establishing the award she received, which celebrates a board member's outstanding contributions to promoting the YMCA’s mission.

“Having known Ken DeGhetto, I am deeply honored to receive this award and to be its first female recipient. It is humbling to stand alongside the distinguished past honorees,” said Waldock. “Over the past 12 years, I have embarked on a significant learning journey. Originally not being from a Y background, I was unaware of its remarkable diversity and inclusivity. I take great pride in being part of the Metro Y family, which is truly exceptional.”

Waldock’s commitment extends beyond her board duties. She has been actively involved in organizing fundraising events, enhancing board member engagement, and advocating for the Y's diverse and inclusive community. Her efforts have significantly strengthened the organization and impacted many lives.

Additionally, Waldock is involved in other community services and runs 1st Impressions Communications, focusing on business coaching and women’s empowerment. “Marlene's dedication and passion have been nothing short of inspiring. Whether it's rallying support from the community, or lending a helping hand wherever needed, Marlene's commitment to the Y's mission is unwavering. Her selflessness and tireless efforts have touched countless lives and strengthened our organization in immeasurable ways,” said Board Chair Daren Phil.

Combining her own career expertise with her Y role, she facilitated a communications course at Pioneer Trails Day Camp and trained camp staff on their vital role at the Y. She played a key role in forming a partnership between Valley Bank and the Y for volunteerism and fundraising, and is a Board Member of the Caldwell/West Essex Kiwanis, sponsoring the Piranhas Swim Team and adaptive programs. Additionally, she has supported senior programs at the West Essex Y for many years.

She hosted "New Jersey Business" on News 12 New Jersey for five years, reaching 1.7 million households. As a nationally published writer, she contributed to Family Circle Magazine and NJBIZ, and appeared in New Jersey Business Magazine. Post-9/11, her work was featured in Business Week’s last small business edition. She now writes inspirational newsletters and poetry.

Waldock has served as Past President of the Women’s Center for Entrepreneurship Corporation and the New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners. Additionally, she has been a board member for the Arts Council of Morris County, Programs for Parents, PSEG Supplier Diversity Committee, and Caldwell University's Business Council.
