For many people, retirement marks the end of a career. For Moe Passante, it marked the beginning of a new one. He shares his story below:
When I was preparing to retire from my full-time career, I wondered how I would stay active and engaged. That's when I decided to renew my swimming certifications at the Sussex County YMCA and return to something I had loved since I was 16 years old: lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons.
After completing the YMCA lifesaving course, I was offered a part-time lifeguarding position in 2010. I also earned my Water Safety Instructor certification and began teaching swim lessons. More than 15 years later, I continue to serve as both a lifeguard and swim instructor at the Sussex County Y. I also work part-time at an aquatic center in Georgia during part of the year.
Now at 79 years old, I am grateful to remain active, continue sharing my passion for aquatics, and help others build water safety skills and confidence in the water.
One of the most rewarding parts of my Y experience has been the opportunity to work alongside wonderful staff members, supportive leaders, and a welcoming community of members. The Y has given me a meaningful way to stay connected, serve others, and continue doing work that I truly enjoy.
