Financial Assistance Transforms Child Care Experience for Family

Financial Assistance Transforms Child Care Experience for Family

When Maria Silvera’s previous child care option lacked activities, enrichment, and the extended hours she needed as a working parent, she decided to enroll her two children in the East Orange YMCA’s Early Childhood Learning program. When the costs for after-school care forced her to un-enroll her children from the Y program, she feared losing safe, reliable care. She worried she might even have to leave her job. Her children, Jose and Jayleen, loved the YMCA and were heartbroken.

“Every day my kids would ask ‘Mommy when are we going back to the YMCA? We want to go back!’ They were so anxious to come back. That’s when I realized the Y was the best place for them. They have never been so happy and so enthusiastic to come to school!” Maria said.

When Maria shared her situation with staff, Child Care Director Sharon Park and the Y’s Executive Director Leah Greene stepped in right away. They listened, cared deeply about her children, and worked with colleagues to secure financial assistance for Maria’s family so Jose and Jayleen could re-enroll in the Y’s preschool program with after-school care. Their quick action lifted a huge weight from Maria’s shoulders and made it possible for her kids to return to the place where they felt happy and supported.

Because of donors and community members who give together, the Y can provide financial assistance that ensures families like Maria’s can stay connected to safe learning, caring adults, and opportunities to grow.

With support in place, Maria kept her job and her children returned to a nurturing environment where they are thriving.

“Now that my children are back at the YMCA, I can go to work without worrying that my kids are being mistreated or that my kids are not getting the proper care and education. I say that because I know for sure that the YMCA is the best place for them to be right now. All thanks to this financial assistance program I was able to keep my job and give my children the best education possible here at the YMCA,” she said.

Her son is speaking more clearly. Her daughter learned to write her name. Both children are excited to go to school each day and participate in the many activities that help them build confidence and new skills. Maria now feels she has a true village standing beside her.

“I truly love that there are a lot of activities always going on at the YMCA, not only for just the children but the whole family,” she added.
