First Time at the Gym? Here are 7 Tips for Success

Stepping into any gym or fitness center for the first time can be overwhelming, from all of the machines and equipment, to the schedules of programs offered. The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges offers some tips for getting the most out of your time, whether you’re new to a gym or coming back after a break.

1. Make Connections

Connect with either the fitness director or a trainer in the fitness center. They can show you how to use the equipment, introduce you to other members, and advise you on the best way to achieve your fitness goals by using your time effectively.

2. Come Prepared

Always bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothes. It’s important to replenish the water your body loses when sweating. The American Council on Exercise advises drinking 7 to 10 ounces of fluid every 10 to 20 minutes during exercise. Wear loose-fitting clothing so you have the right amount of movement to exercise safely and comfortably.

3. Sign Up for Programs and Classes

Join in-person or virtual group exercise classes to keep your routing interesting and meet new people. You can also sign up for introductory sessions with personal trainers or wellness coaches to get extra support.

4. Track Your Progress

Write down your goals and give yourself a realistic timeline. If you’ve set goals such as losing weight or building muscle, keep a simple log of what exercises you did and any other useful details, like how much weight you lifted or how long you exercised. This will help you see your progress over time.

5. Bring a Friend

Working out with a friend can make exercise more fun and help you stick with your routine. Plus, members and their guests may be able to take advantage of special promotions.

6. Ask for Help

If you’re unsure how to use a machine or have concerns, such as an injury, ask a staff member for help. A fitness instructor can show you safer options or modifications so you can still have a successful workout.

7. Don’t Overdo It

You can lose motivation by trying to do too much right away. Also, you could risk getting injured if you push your body’s limits too far. Start at a level that feels challenging but safe, and build up slowly.
